Heart Attacks Happen!

I couldn’t believe it when they told me I was having a heart attack. I was a fit 45 year old women, healthy, active, had never smoked and didn’t drink. I thought you have got to be joking.

Even the emergency doctor didn’t believe me, he thought I was making the whole thing up. He thought I was attention seeking and was going to send me home in a taxi with a painkiller!

But it was no joke, it was alarmingly true. I was terrified. There were so many questions going through my mind but the only thing I wanted to know was if I was going to die.

This is what happened to me, but what if it was you?

Picture this, you’re standing in the check out queue at the supermarket feeling tired and off color. It’s nothing you can put your finger on, you just don’t feel right. You think back to an hour ago running to answer the phone, and realise you were really short of breathe. Now you’re feeling anxious for no real reason and there is an increasing tightness in your chest and you think mmm this doesn’t seem right. What do you do?

Do you go home and rest or do you call an ambulance because you think you may be having a heart attack. Sadly, a lot of people just go home and rest and by the time they end up in the emergency department much heart muscle damage has already been done. This could have been avoided if they knew what to look out for.

If you’re reading this then maybe you or someone you love has had an awful scare with their heart. You may be feeling vulnerable and alone, but please don’t be afraid of the future as there are lots of steps you can take to ensure that you get your life and health back on track.

Leanne Sexton has provided a vital resource for heart attack victims and their families.

Well written and researched, poignant, personal and comforting. It will answer all your questions after you leave the Coronary Care Unit.

I highly recommend it!

After a heart attack or diagnosis of heart disease
your emotions are on a crazy ride. I felt terrified, confused, anxious and wondered why me?

You have lots of questions racing around in your head but the answers are hard to find. I got frustrated having to search in a hundred different places for worthwhile information on heart health – then all I could find was medical jargon and statistics – it drove me mad!

Does this sound familiar?

Some questions you want the answers for might be:

    • What are heart attack signs and symptoms?

    • Are there different heart attack symptoms for women?

    • What are heart disease signs and symptoms?

    • What are the causes of heart disease?

    • What is a Myocardial Infarction?

    • What is Cardiovascular Disease and Coronary Heart Disease?

    • What is the difference between a heart attack and angina?

    • What is the difference between heart attack chest pain and indigestion?

    • How do you know if someone is having a stroke?

    • If you have been diagnosed with heart problems, what next?

The list goes on…

Why did I write this book? I had a heart attack at 45 and struggled to find meaningful information in the one place to help me. This book explains all about your heart and how it works, symptoms of a heart attack and heart disease, surgery, medication, lifestyle and all the things you should do to be heart smart. It’s also a story from the days leading up to, day of and time after my heart attack. I write about how I felt emotionally and my recovery. I wish I had this book to read back then because I know I wouldn’t have felt as scared as I did.

After my heart attack I read books which just quoted statistics, medical jargon and studies, with no real worthwhile content for everyday practical living with heart trouble.

Writing this book has helped me to understand what happened to me and how to cope both physically and emotionally. It gave me a big kick in the backside to get my lifestyle under control.

It’s essential to build a strong foundation for your body to thrive on – you have to give yourself a helping hand with heart health being top of the list!

This wealth of information is a great resource that will help you stay focused on your heart health lifestyle goals. If there are no signs of heart problems or heart disease it’s imperative to keep it that way. Your health must be your greatest treasure.

“As a healthy 45 year old, having a heart attack was never something I thought would happen to me – boy was I wrong – it completely blew me away. I naïvely thought only older people had heart attacks.”

“Heart Attack! But I’m too young to have a heart attack” were the soul shattering words I uttered when I was told that the nausea and chest pain I was feeling wasn’t caused by a bad case of indigestion.

I was so shocked I could barely speak, the tears just rolled down my face. That awful moment changed my life forever. To say my world came crashing down around me is an understatement.

Being an avid reader with a myriad of interests, I am always looking for new and interesting books to read. While browsing on the internet recently, I stumbled upon an interesting e-book entitled Heart Attack! But I’m too young to have a heart attack…, written by Leanne Sexton. I was immediately intrigued by the book’s title, and thought that it deserved more than just a cursory read. Imagine my alarm when I learned that Ms. Sexton, someone who reportedly maintained a very healthy lifestyle, had suffered a heart attack at the age of 45. I was hooked, as I found myself mesmorized by Ms. Sexton’s detailed account of her obviously harrowing and alarming experience. She shares with her readers the long and arduous road she took in order to recover, but fortunately, the author had the tenacity and sheer will to survive this life-threatening ordeal.

As a result of this life-changing experience, Ms. Sexton appears to have seized this opportunity to become fully educated about every aspect of heart health. And in doing so, she has compiled a remarkably detailed book, one that will provide its readers with much-needed and very valuable information. Without a doubt, Heart Attack! But I’m too young to have a heart attack… will ultimately prove to be an indispensable resource to people of all ages, but in particular, to younger, unsuspecting people who aren’t necessarily informed about heart health.

I applaud Leanne Sexton’s efforts and thank her for sharing her wealth of information with people around the world.

I. Rivera, Los Angeles, California

Dear Friend

My name is Leanne Sexton and at the age of 45 I suffered a heart attack that could have taken my life.

I’m not overweight, am vegetarian, have never smoked, only have the occasional glass of wine and was healthy, so what happened to me should never have happened, but it did.

Although I was with family I felt so scared and alone. The feelings of helplessness and isolation just washed over me and covered me with a total sense of despair which left me wondering how on earth I was going to get through this. I felt emotionally and physically exhausted. I struggled with self doubt, wondering if I had the courage and faith to pull myself together.

If you had told me 18 months ago that my world would be turned upside down by a major health scare, I would have said “no way”.

My Cardiologist told me that heart disease is one of the biggest health problems in the developed world, taking millions of people every year. I was shocked to hear this.

In hospital there is a certain level of comfort that if anything goes wrong there will be immediate assistance. But what happens when you get home and it’s just you? I can tell you its scary, you feel anxious and isolated with every little twinge in your chest ringing the alarm bells. You get stronger but you need guidance. It’s never too early or too late for healthy lifestyle changes!

Doctor’s, Cardiologist’s, National Heart Foundations, the World Health Organisation and Government health initiatives all talk about the dangers that high cholesterol, high blood pressure, too much stress, limited exercise, bad diet and bad lifestyle choices have on your body which may lead to heart problems and diabetes. This book is a practical guide that talks about all of these topics.

My doctor told me that over half the population are only one hamburger and fries away from having a heart attack!

These books have helped me to sleep much better, prioritise my day so there is more me time (very important!) and how to relax my mind when it’s flying around at 100 miles an hour. Happy reading!

Beginners Guide to Meditation

Beginner's Guide to MeditationThis book has been great in giving me an uncomplicated beginner’s look at meditation. I had never tried mediation before my heart attack as I was always someone that could never stay still long enough or switch my racing mind off, but at the insistence of my Doctor I gave it a try and I’m so glad I did.

I practice the techniques in the quiet of my lounge room floor and love the peacefulness that meditation brings into my life. I wish I had taken it up years ago!

Sleep Like a Pro

Sleep Like a ProHave you ever felt really tired laying on the sofa watching TV, but then when you get into bed are suddenly wide awake, with a million thoughts spinning around in your head? That was me, not getting enough sleep or good quality sleep affected me very badly, I felt drained, tired and very cranky. I knew I had to do something and I didn’t want to take sleeping pills. So I had a look around and found this book. The techniques have really helped me to get my sleeping patterns back to a more normal rhythm and now I’m happy to say that I get a good night sleep, which eluded me for quite some time. The book is easy to follow and very helpful.

This book is a great wake up call for those who think heart attacks are just for old people. It has many easy and practical ways to reduce the chance of heart problems and other health-related issues, and has made me more mindful of diet choices. It’s interesting to note that heart-related problems can affect you, even if there is no family history. The illustrations throughout the book are very clear, and indicate just how easily all the “bad stuff” can build up and create serious problems that can affect you for the rest of your life. I’d recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly interested in their long-term health. The old saying “Prevention is better than cure” absolutely applies.
